Dennis Ritter and Scott Jelich: MFA Thesis Show

Dennis Ritter

inHabituation
April 25th - 28th
Opening: Saturday, April 25th
Time: 7-9PM
Location: Fosdick-Nelson Gallery

My work is an exploration of the intersection of autobiography, family histroy and literature through sculptural vignettes. I choose objects from the domestic landscape as the subjects of this work.  Objects of the mundane - a houseplant, a book, a common chair - are part of a larger collective memory, they are signifiers of a time and a place, at once familiar but radically different for each person. As groupings of objects in space, these signifiers create stories.

April 25th – 28th

Opening:  Saturday, April 25th
Time: 7-9PM
Location: Fosdick-Nelson Gallery

The forming, shaping and cutting on the potter’s wheel tends to be a discipline in repetition and consistency. There are times when I know what each move will be from start to finish and which tool is required to do the job that my fingers cannot.  There are also instances, more often than not, where my working is not this regimented. It is more like a song or dance, structured, but with notes of improvisation. Choices and moves occur throughout the making process in response to the material and how the material responds to my touch. Each pot is created to be a contemplative piece, to exist as both a functional object as well as poetic narrative to convey a sense of time, volume, and structure.
